The tournament was first held under the name Australasian Championships in 1905. A total of 17 men took part. The 108th edition of the Australian Open took place from 20 January to 2 February 2020. The prize money reached a new record high of 71 million Australian dollars. In the men’s competition, Novak Djokovic defended his title and lifted his eighth trophy in Melbourne. The Serb came to a tight victory in five sets over Austrian tennis ace Dominic Thiem in a thrilling final. In the women’s competition, Sofia Kenin triumphed surprisingly. The young American defeated Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza in the Australian Open final and claimed the first Grand Slam title of her career.

A look back at the Australian Open 2019

The Australian Open 2019 took place from 14 to 27 January. It was the tournament’s 107th edition. The prize money was again increased significantly and amounted to 62.5 million Australian dollars. In the men’s competition, Novak Djokovic came out on top. The Serb won his seventh trophy at the Australian Open. Naomi Osaka triumphed in the women’s competition. It was the second Grand Slam title of her career for the Japanese.

A look back at the Australian Open 2018

In 2018, the Australian Open took place from 15 to 28 January. It was the tournament’s 106th edition. The prize money was increased by 10 per cent compared to the previous year and amounted to 55 million Australian dollars. Roger Federer could successfully defend his Australian Open title from the previous year in the men’s competition and celebrated his sixth victory in Melbourne. The women’s champion was Caroline Wozniacki, who secured her first ever Grand Slam title this way.

A look back at the Australian Open 2017

In 2017, the Australian Open was held from 16 to 29 January. It was the tournament’s 105th edition. The prize money amounted to 50 million Australian dollars. In the men’s competition, Roger Federer prevailed who claimed his fifth Australian Open victory in Melbourne this way. Serena Williams triumphed in the women’s competition, following her victory in the eighth “Sister Act” in a Grand Slam final. With her 23rd title, she even beat former record holder Steffi Graf.
