Seven Card Stud

Unlike in Texas Hold'em, in Seven Card Stud there are no community cards. Each player gets three hidden cards and four face up. The goal is to make the best poker hand possible with five of the seven cards.

Gameplay

Ante

Every player must place an ante (forced bet) before the game.

Deal

After the ante has been placed, each player gets three cards; two face down and one face up. The last card is known as the "door card". Then the first betting round begins with the player who has the lowest face up card. If two players have the same card then the suit counts.

In Seven Card Stud the ranking is alphabetical by suit: clubs, diamonds, hearts then spades. In this "bring-in" the player can place a "small bet" or just half. The round then continues clockwise. Each player can:
  • call (place the required minimum bet)
  • raise (increase the size of the bet required to stay in the pot)
  • fold (give up their hand and take no further action in the pot)

Fourth Street

After the first betting round the remaining players get another face up card (fourth street) and the second betting round begins. From the second betting round, the player with the highest face up combination goes first. They can:
  • check
  • or place a bet.
If a player checks, then the next player can also either check or bet, and so on.

When a player has bet, then the next player must either:
  • call (place the required bet and play on)
  • raise (increase the size of the bet required to stay in the pot)
  • fold (give up their hand and take no further action in the pot)
Important: There is a maximum of three raises per betting round.

Fifth Street and Sixth Street

After the second betting round the remaining players get their third face up card (fifth street) and the next betting round follows. Warning: From now on the stakes are higher and will stay at this level for the rest of the betting rounds. All remaining players get their fourth face up card (sixth street) and the fourth betting round follows.

Seventh Street (River)

After the fourth betting round, all of the remaining players will receive a final card, face down. Players now have four face up cards and three face down. The player with the highest value of all four face up cards starts the betting round.

Note: If there are not enough cards left for the number of players then the last card will be played as a community card. All players can use this to complete their hand.

Showdown

There is also a showdown in Seven Card Stud if there is still more than one player in the running after the river. In the end the pot will go to the player with the best hand.
